Hudson strives to satisfy clients by consistently implementing C.O.S.T.© principles to ensure maximum value and top quality service for our customers. The recent experience of a Hudson vessel travelling to North America demonstrates the measures Hudson takes to prevent the costly delays that can result from an Asian Gypsy Moth (AGM) infestation.
AGM is a devastating forest pest native to Asia which is known to lay its eggs on vessels and cargo. North American ports have strict laws and regulations to prevent the AGM from spreading to the continent. Each Vessel which discharges at a United States or Canadian port after calling an Asian port will be inspected by the authorities for signs of an AGM infestation. If evidence of AGM is found, the ship will be expelled from port and may be barred from returning. For ship operators and their customers, this means that any Vessel which calls to an Asian port must be scrutinized for any sign of AGM or else face expensive disruptions to the voyage.
The previously mentioned Hudson vessel was stemming bunkers in an Asian port before completing its voyage to North America. Aware of the time sensitive nature of the voyage, and the disastrous effects a late discovery of AGM would have on the customer, Hudson ordered an AGM inspection conducted as soon as the vessel stemmed bunkers. Although the vessel passed its AGM examination, Hudson demanded that the Captain and crew conduct regular searches of the vessel for signs of AGM. Hudson insisted on daily inspections of vessel surfaces, hand railings, pipes, posts, and light fixtures. Hudson also made sure that every crevasse and surface was searched for signs of AGM, and ordered any signs of infestation purged by physical and chemical methods. Hudson’s utmost priority is to prevent any disruptions for our customers, and our diligent effort to ensure against any disruption from AGM is but one manifestation of that approach.
