Hudson Shipping is responsible for many cargoes that require a high standard of hold cleanliness, such as mineral sands, grains, sugar, and more. As such, Hudson strives to ensure that all vessels' holds are fully prepared for cargo upon arrival at the loading port. Such determination satisfies the vessels' charterers and supports their technical department in reducing the costs of off-hire and other expenses that can be incurred when holds do not meet loading standards.
The first proactive step Hudson takes is arranging a preliminary hold survey at the last port of call prior to the vessel ballasting to the subsequent load port. The preliminary hold survey benefits all parties, as the surveyor can evaluate the vessel's condition as well as advise the ship master and crew on the necessary cleaning that may be required. The evaluation allows the crew to work more efficiently and effectively, as they know what needs to be done and what cleaning equipment and supplies are needed in order to prepare the vessel for her next load. In turn, the technical department is able to coordinate with the vessel and avoid the possibility of not passing hold inspection at the load port.
In cases where the required cleaning is beyond the crew's capability, Hudson works closely with their technical department and masters to make additional arrangements to accomplish the intended results. Working with our expert cleaning partners, we create recommendations for shore gang cleaning, additional equipment, or labor that may be necessary. At all stages, Hudson clearly communicates the costs and benefits of the proposed action to the owner, expecting the vessel will pass inspection at load port with minimal added expense.
Thanks to this careful coordination and planning, Hudson enjoys an excellent proportion of vessels ready to load at the scheduled berth. As a result, charterers are satisfied, as their shipments are not delayed due to the vessel's condition, and the technical department has done their job to save significant costs that could be incurred due to cleaning expenses and other consequences of an unready vessel. In order to help ensure these benefits for our vessels' management, Hudson Shipping takes an extra step by creating strong incentives for vessel personnel to take ownership of preparing the holds to load the intended cargo. If the vessel passes the first hold inspection at load port, the master and crew are always rewarded for their proactiveness.
